Throwing on Potter’s Wheel

Instructor

David Nelson

Minimum Enrollment

6

Class Price

$120.00

Class Description

Throwing clay on the wheel is a very challenging and absorbing activity. In this 4 week class, focus will be on learning skills needed to throw basic forms. Repeating this class, will help you develop your skills over time, and we can work on embellishments and more complex forms. For beginners, in the first three class meetings, we will work towards controlling the clay to make simple forms, using colored slips to decorate the surface, and trimming to finish the forms. In the fourth class, we will glaze those forms. You can expect that in your first three weeks of class, you will make bowls and proceed to cylinders as your skills develop. Experienced throwers, and those wishing to do hand-building techniques in the class are welcome to register for this class, but the attention of the instructor will be mainly with beginning throwers, with attention to difficulties any students are experiencing behind the wheel. Demonstration of more advanced techniques will be given as time allows.

Included Materials

Tools are provided. Bring a towel for wiping hands and covering your lap while at the potter's wheel. We have aprons, but come prepared to get dirty.
Clay is an additional cost of $15.90 and there is an additional firing fee of $2.00/lb. You should anticipate firing at least 7 lbs. for your class projects.
You will have use of the studio to practice and finish projects during the weeks of your class, when the building is open and there are no other classes in the ceramics studio.
